Shoot Low Sheriff

I know that your wrote songs when you were with the "Gypsies", and you also told me that you do not read music. I have a problem reconciling the dicotomy. How do you do it?

Thanks for your question. At least to me, the ability to read music isn't a requirement for writing songs. Anyone can write a song. Just make up a melody in your head and put some words to it. It does help to know a little bit of music theory--what chords work in a given key, etc. But even that doesn't require reading music.
Even when I played trombone in high school, I couldn't read very well--just enough to know what notes to play. I relied on my ear to know how the phrasing went.
